Waher-style Theme

Waher-style Theme

If you are using Windows and use Notepad++ as one of your main source-code editors and happen to be a web developer then you might just love this.  I originally developed this for personal use for I was unhappy with other themes or found them a little inconsistent across different web development languages. By now I have used this theme in Notepad++ for more than a year now.

Thanks to this being shared in reddit, Twitter and Facebook, it has been downloaded more than ten thousand times in one day.

It is recommended to use this theme with Consolas font.

You can download the theme archive HERE (*.rar archive) or the theme XML directly HERE (right click and save-as). Preview is available here.

Features:

  • Comfortable color scheme with a dark background and eye-friendly colors for working long hours
  • The styles used are intended for a web developer and cover most common files associated with web development
  • Supports Notepad++ styles for following languages and files: CSS, HTML, *.ini files, JavaScript, PHP, SQL and XML.
  • Covered by GNU Free License, you can modify and redistribute it in however way you like.
  • Some support for Java and Python files (recently added, might require some testing)

Install:

  1. Unpack the *.rar archive into your Notepad++ installation directory under subfolder /themes/
  2. Open Notepad++
  3. Go to Settings -> Style Configurator
  4. Select Waher-style from Select Theme dropdown
  5. Click Save & Close

I hope this theme will serve you as well as it has served me!

  • Ando says:

    Awesome.

I’m into dark themes too and Notepad++ is my 2nd choice as a code editor in Windows.

Nice work and + points for open sourcing it.

Oh my god, can’t believe this. I was looking for this color scheme/style for notepad++ earlier today because I remember seeing this or something like this just yesterday when someone on reddit posted their top 5 notepad++/development fonts and their background was something similar.

It’ll be awesome to develop my php stuff with this scheme now.

    Thanks from Pakistan :)

Can this be edited in some way to be used for .asp and .aspx pages also? I would love to give it a try because it looks great.

  • Hugo says:

Cheers dude, big fan of any theme with a #222 background or there abouts! Should help with the migraines after 16 hour coding sessions.. :D

  • Andrew says:

Looks great! Here’s hoping more programming languages get supported!

  • whatsayu says:

rar format for the archive … seriously?

  • jonathan says:

yeah why rar? i can’t afford 7-zip… too much money man.

  • Kristo Vaher says:

I have added an alternative, direct-click XML link. You can get it here: http://waher.net/blog/Waher-style.xml

  • Kristo Vaher says:

Yes it can be edited for ASP as well, however I have not used ASP myself. Someone who knows ASP could take this theme and edit it to suit ASP (they can take one of the existing themes and modify it with new colors, for example).

  • this is very nice, thank you!

  • srsly says:

@whatsayu and @jonathan: Never heard of WinRAR? It’s free. Well, it only has a nag screen, but other than that it is fully functional. Easily one of the best archive utilities for Windows ever.

Only problem I find is double-clicking words to highlight them is too subtle. I have to strain my eyes to see all instances of the highlighted text.

  • FRANKLYN says:

Tranks a lot to share it, I need a good notepad++ theme… Are you thinking to make the C++ syntax with your this theme?

  • Brendan says:

Any way to change the cursor color from the dark? I like to be able to see the text cursor and its hard to distinguish it

  • Appel says:

Thanks for a great theme! Would love to see .htaccess support as well. Why not put it up on Github so we can fork it? ;)

    Thanks again!

  • w.izzy says:

    Thanks!

  • Blaze says:

Thanks for this, been using the built-in “zenburn” theme but it was straining my eyes after a while – your theme pretty much fixes all my issues I had with zeburn, both for daytime and night time programming.

  • equasar says:

Will this be updated for C++ support? :) .

  • Zeaks says:

Thanks for this. I didn’t realize Notepad++ even had themes until I saw your post and I’ve used it forever.

  • Nico says:

Switched from Bespin to your theme and love it! Great to see that search results and line feed markers are styled also.

Is it possible to adjust the line bookmark graphic that is shown when hitting Ctrl + F2? With a dark background it looks kind of weird.

  • Kristo Vaher says:

    Thanks for kind comments!

As for Ctrl+F2, it sure looks weird, but this is due to the graphics file used by Notepad++ and it is not possible to be ‘themed’. It’s intended for light backgrounds. Hopefully they will fix it at some point.
